WIMBLEDON WOMEN’S QUARTER FINALS PREVIEW

The quarters start with the most difficult match to split the players, with Maion Bartoli up against Sabine Lisicki. Bartoli seems to have got into all sorts of scrapes, and out of them, in early rounds, with her 9-7 win over Flavia Pennetta and three setter with Lourdes Domingues Lino. Bartoli does have power on both wings, one of the more resolute temperaments on the WTA Tour, and good experience with her run to the final. Lisicki won the Birmingham event and has more than justified her wild card, but Bartoli can just edge home at good odds.

In the second match, Petra Kvitova has looked very impressive so far, with hr attacking serve volley game. Her dismissal of Yanina Wickmayer yesterday, an opponent who has given her trouble in the past, was very impressive. Opponent Tsvetana Pironkova has shown no sort of form at all up to Wimbledon, but reached the semi-finals. Nevertheless, readers of pre-tourament preview will know Kvitova is our pick to win, and we can’t go against her.

There’s little value in backing that frequent Grand Slam underachiever Victoria Azarenka in her match with rank outsider Tamira Paszek, and Azarenka should get the job doe without undue fuss, while in the final one of the last 8 matches, Maria Sharapova faces the more subtle skills of Dominika Cibulkova, who put out world number one Caroline Wozniacki. Cibulkova could feed off Sharapova’s power, but is ultimately likely to find herself blown into the locker room.
