9/2 Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, 8/1 Venus Williams, 10/1 Caroline Wozniacki, Li Na, Petra Kvitova, 16/1 Victoria Azarenka, Vera Zvonareva
The women’s singles is as difficult to call this year as it has been for many years. Maria Sharapova probably deserves her favourite’s status given the form she has shown on her least favourite surface of clay, winning Rome and making a deep run at the French Open. She has been put into the top quarter of the draw alongside the world number one Caroline Wozniacki – who has not had a warm up event on grass. She could also have to face the big hitting Julia Goerges fairly early in the tourament. Sharapova looks a nailed on quarter-finalist at least.
In the second quarter of the draw, we have a fascinating trio of Li Na, the French Open champion, Serena Williams and Marion Bartoli. Williams looked scarily competitive in her return in Eastbourne and if she can get in some match practice against weaker opponents she has a shot. It is however a very difficult quarter for her to escape from and even her first couple of opponents look tricky.
The third quarter looks very open, with Victoria Azarenka the seed scheduled to make it through. Francesca Schiavone and Andrea Petkovic are also here. Petkovic has some movement issues though she can hit well, and Azarenka seems to struggle in the slams. Anastasia Payluchenkova is also a danger. The last quarter includes Petra Kvitova and Vera Zvonareva. Kvitova looks to have the aggressive serve and volley game to put together a really deep run. Venus Williams and Jelena Jankovic are also scheduled for an intriguig third round meeting.
The draw really suits Petra Kvitova, as does the surface, and she should make a really deep run here. Back Petra Kvitova at 10/1 with Betfred and you can claim a free £50 bet by using our link.
