The USPGA Golf Odds have Rory McIlory priced up as favourite to win his second major of the year.

The USPGA does have a reputation for throwing up surprise winners, with names like Shaun Micheel and Y.E.Yang springing to mind, yet its also been won by some of the leading names. Given there is no player who is dominant in the majors, it might yet pay to look from outside the established names as to anyone who might have the credentials to make a step up. What does seem unlikely is that a veteran like Darren Clarke will produce some kind of Indian summer.
This year’s course, the Highlands Club in Atlanta, is more than 7,500 yards long, so the ability to produce long, accurate, drives might be among the most important factor when searching for the Champion here. Skills on the putting greens will help. Phil Mickelson has been in reasonable form and was narrowly beaten by David Toms the last time the USPGA was here, so he has to go on the short list. Rory McIlory and Lee Westwood both have to be respected, but we are always happy to go against Westwood in the majors, with success so far.
Steve Williams – sorry Adam Scott’s success – in the World Golf Championship makes him look a very viable contender to make his major breakthrough, but it still seems safe to rule out Tiger Woods and Rickie Fowler. Jason Day has been consistent in many of the leading events, and he deserves to be on the shortlist.
