Sharapova should have little trouble making it through.

US OPEN WOMEN LATEST ODDS

7/2 Kim Clijsters (Betfred), 9/2 Maria Sharapova (Betfred), 15/2 Caroline Wozinacki (VC Bet), 9/1 Victoria Azarenka (BWin), 12/1 Venus Williams (Stan James)

US OPEN WOMEN DAY 2 PREVIEW

Sharapova has impressed having come back into competitive action with a good run in Cincinnati and this is an interesting contest. Groth is an Australian who is moving up the rankings and who can hit the ball hard, while Sharapova has to prove she’s fully recovered from the ankle injury she picked up. This is not a given though the Russian should come through.

Jelena Jankovic, not really among the fancies despite being seeded 4, starts the day against the Romanian Simona Halep in a contest that doesn’t look to challenging while Caroline Wozniacki shouldn’t have too many problems with the American wild card of the long lasting tennis family Chelsey Gullickson.

Former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova should have too much power for veteran Kimiko Date Krumm – she turns 37 next month – while Na Li and Katereyna Bondarenko square off in a match of two quarter-finalists. The Chinese player has been in the better form recently.

Finally American wild card Coco Vandeweghe is meant to be one to watch. She should blast Sabine Lisicki off court – or that’s the theory anyway. Vandeweghe is good value at 8/11 with Stan James to take this one down.
