US OPEN TENNIS PREVIEW – MEN’S SINGLES

So who can come through one hurricane and 127 rival players to land their first Grand Slam title? Novak Djokovic’s brilliant season makes him a deserved favourite to lift the title, but there is some serious concern over his shoudler injury. It’s the kind of problem that is liable to flare up late in the tournament due to sheer wear and tear. Djokovic’s draw is fairly kind, early on especially, with all round Irish good egg Conor Niland first and either Pere Riba or Carlos Berlocq in Round Two. Gael Monfils and Tomas Berdych are also in this quarter, with Berdych seemingly showing signs of life and his most likely quarter-final opponent. Given the physical concerns here, we would have to say it’s very much a watch and see on the Wimbledon champ and world number one.

The main contenders in the second quarter are Roger Federer, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Mardy Fish. Federer’s had losses to good players throughouth this North American hard court season and has to be watched at this stage. He’s proved susceptible to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at Wimbledon and beyond, and the Frenchman could easily emerge here into the final four. Federer could even be fallible to Marin Cilic in Round Three.

Quarter three features Andy Murray, who is arguably in the best shape out of the top four players. This section of the draw though, has several minefields, including 2009 champion Juan Martin Del Potro, big John Isner, Stanislas Wawrinka and Feliciano Lopez. It would mean Murray would have a fair few testing matches to make the last four, and we know how flat he can get when he reaches final.

Rafael Nadal, in contrast, has a much more gentle route to the last four. He has looked very scratchy in his hard court matches, but he should be able to ease in here. His self- belief does look to have been damaged by his repeated beatings by Novak Djokovic, but he ought to be able to make the last four.
