Nadal is reported to be hitting the ball exceptionally well in practice, and he should get a good, but not over taxing workout, as the Russian put in a decent effort last week in New Haven. Some of the other big names, Andy Murray and Sam Querrey, have been saved till Wednesday.
The most intriguing match is Novak Djokovic, seeded 3, against another Serb Viktor Troicki, who has had a good summer on the hard courts. Djokovic seems to save his best for the US Open though and a 4 set victory is great value at 11/4 with Stan James, who offer a free £25 bet.
Marcos Baghdatis has a very gentle opener against Arnaud Clement, while it’s the battle of the crocks as Kristof Vliegen meets James Blake. Mardy Fish has been the player to watch in this hard court season and should win cofortably versus Jan Hajek.
The most intriguing match up is David Ferrer, seeded 10, against Alexandr Dolgopolov, the big hitting Ukrainian. He hasn’t quite delivered yet this summer, and Ferrer should just have enough up his sleeve to make him wait another year for success, while David Nalbandian faces a match that is perhaps trickier than the rankings suggest against big serving South African qualifier Rik de Voest.
