The US Open Tennis Betting sees Roger Federer as men’s singles favourite after two good performances in the Masters events in Toronto and Cincinnati, while it’s close for second favourite between Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray.

Despite his poor showings (relatively) at Wimbledon and the French Open, it seems right that Federer starts as favourite. Although not looking as imperious of old, he is playing some of his best tennis of the year, although it was a sweat to beat Mardy Fish in the Cincinnati final. Federer clearly likes the work he’s doing with coach Paul Annacone, as he has announced their relationship will continue and be extended once he’s completed his contract with the British Lawn Tennis Assocation. The draw has few concerns for Federer – a rusty Lleyton Hewitt in round three and possibly Jurgen Melzer after that, who’s not shown much on hard courts before a projected last 8 battle with Robin Soderling.
Rafael Nadal has also been treated gently by the way the names fall. His main threats could be Ernests Gulbis or possibly David Nalbandian en route to the last eight. The Nalbandian who sparkled in the Washington event might have a chance against the Spaniard, but Nadal was not moving with the same fluency as he has been in the Masters series. Whether or not he has peaked at the right time might only become apparent.
Andy Murray is the interesting contender – he was brilliant in Toronto, showing an aggressive edge to his game that critics have been demanding for some time, and there’s no doubt he beat Nadal and Federer on merit. By the end of Cincinnati he was exhausted, and his loss to Mardy Fish, safely in the other half of the draw, can be excused. A re-match with Sam Querrey could be awkward in Round 3 – and an encounter with Tomas Berdych awaits in the last eight. Murray’s best tennis can get him to the final without question – where he probably has to face a psychologically testing battle with Federer.
Novak Djokovic still seems half a step behind the top three. and he must face the winner of the two of the most in form players who have to meet in round three, Marcos Baghdatis and Mardy Fish. Fish looks great value at around 70/1 on Betfair.
Of the other live outsiders, John Isner is probably too injured to make a serious impact and Andy Roddick remains a little short of top form. Big servig Kevin Anderson could well cause some damage before bowing out.
