Luke Donald, Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer will all go out in one group, indicating the pre-eminence of Europeans in the game right now.

While the US Open looks wide open, the challenge it demands in terms of driving accuracy will often weed out many players at an early stage. With the rough often punishing it also places a premium on players ability to save par and hit good recovery shots. The Congressional course, this year’s venue, has hosted PGA Tour events, but it has been changed since then and it will also be set up to be even more punishing.
Lee Westwood has shown good consistency across the major championships and deserves his place as favourite, while Phil Mickelson (pictured) is a player with the ability to conjure up pars from difficult positions. His recent form though, leaves a little to be desired. Luke Donald will surely go close, as his consistency and patience are made for the kind of course the USGA likes to set up. Of the other Americans, Hunter Mahan also fits the player type, while Dustin Johnson lead after three rounds last year only to implode. Nevertheless, he’s been a consistent force in recent majors.
Of the outsiders, Geoff Ogilvy is consistent enough to merit some respect, as is K.J.Choi, a winner on this course on the PGA Tour.
We think Dustin Johnson can put right last year’s wrongs and we’ll be backing Dustin Johnson at 22/1 with Betfred – use our link not only to claim a free £50 bet, but to get paid out each-way if Johnson finishes in the top six.
