There’s a nice balance to this match, with Stoke currently holding an unbeaten home record and Newcastle having not been beaten yet in the Premier League. Stoke have become a very awkward side to possess against, as they’ve added quality out wide to their physical robustness, plus the talents of Jonathan Woodgate, when fit, and Peter Crouch. They have had serious investment and it’s time they were re-assessed as being a mid-table outfit. They should be pushing for the Europa League. Jermaine Pennant is fit to play which should add extra crosses to get into the box.
Newcastle have put together a solid team with physical strength in most areas again, but Cheik Tiote, a real presence in midfield, is not expected to feature. Steven Taylor won’t be put off by a broken nose either. If they can stand up to Stoke physically, they are also capable of producing some half-decent football. They have yet to find a win against the Potters though, since Tony Pulis’ side joined the Premier League.
