As is the way of the FA Cup, it’s as much about who doesn’t play for the Premier League side as who does. Edwin van der Sar is given a rest – generous considering his retirement. Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and Rafael da Silva are all missing in defence and Michael Carrick may not make it either, so it is a slightly more vulnerable looking United than usual. They remain a ruthlessly efficient force so far, bar their one slip up in the Carling Cup against West Ham.
The Saints suffered an unexpected loss to Tranmere last weekend and have brought in a new winger Dany N’Guessan. Perhaps their most free scoring midfielder AdamLallana is a doubt here too, along with Dean Hammond, a good scampering and tidying influence in the centre. St.Mary’s is also a nice welcoming place for Premier League teams, with facilities good enough for the top flight. With Lallana out and Ricky Lambert not firing like in previous seasons, this may be just slightly too big an ask.
