Manchester City have started their much promised spending spree, by confirming they have signed the Spanish midfielder David Silva from Valencia on a four year contract, with the club describing him as one of the best in Europe.
Silva has scored 21 goals in four seasons and helped Spain to the European title. He’s currently on World Cup duty.
The Spaniard says he is after a new challenge - ” I am thrilled about playing in England with Manchester City. I believe the Premier League is one of the best competitions in the world and I want to bring success to City and win trophies for them.”
City manager Roberto Mancini said: “I am so pleased he is coming to us, I think he can make a big, big impact for Manchester City. In signing David, we are showing the World that we are bringing the best players here and that we hope to compete to win the Premier League.”
City have already signed another player currently on World Cup duty, the German midfielder Jerome Boateng.
Mancini’s side missed out on the Champions League places, but do have a place in next season’s Europa League, as well as seemingly limitless funds from their Arab owners to attract players.
Things look bleaker for Valencia though, who are shedding their key players to raise funds despite Champions League qualification. David Villa, their brilliant striker, has joined Barcelona. The Spanish side have had problems with building a new stadium. Despite this impending sense of doom, they did finish third last season, but without their two main Spanish assests, a repeat will be difficult.
