This is one of the weaker fields you will find for a Masters event, so it might well be a lower ranked player can make hay here. Andy Murray’s brilliant third set against Rafael Nadal in hsi Tokyo final has caught the eye here, and he is seeded 2, in the bottom half of the draw. Murray has a decent enough draw with Dmitry Tursunov or Thomaz Bellucci first up and Gilles Simon as his projected last eight opponent, who he beats regularly these days. Tsonga or Fish like in wait in the semi-finals. Murray looks more than likely to at least reach the last four.
Nadal’s top half of the draw has David Ferrer, Tomas Berdych and Nicolas Almagro as the other seeds scheduled to reach the last eight. The Ferrer/Almagro quarter looks the most open to surprises with Milos Raonic, Mikhail Youzhy, Andy Roddick and Fernando Verdasco all lying in wait. Nadal might have a tricky third round match with Florian Mayer, who is hitting some rich form late in the year.
It’s difficult to see anyone really holding a candle to Nadal or Murray at the moment, but there is value in going for an outsider in that weak looking second quarter.
