Colin Montgomerie has gone with Padraig Harrington (pictured), Luke Donald and Eduardo Molinari after his win at the Johnnie Walker Championship. It means there are no places for Justin Rose and Paul Casey.
Montgomerie said: “The stature of Padraig Harrington means he’s someone in matchplay golf that no one wants to play. Luke Donald can compete in fourballs and foursomes.”
He also heaped praise on Eduardo Molinari’s efforts to win at Gleneagles, saying: “In my time as a player no a European tour I don’t thin I’ve seen a finish of that quality under so much pressure from anyone – ever.” It looks as if that gave the Scot a late change of heart.
They join automatic qualifiers Lee Westwood, Rory McIlory, USPGA winner Martin Kaymer, Graeme McDowell, Ian Poulter, Ross Fisher, Francesco Molinari, Peter Hanson and Miguel Angel Jimenez.
The American captain Corey Pavin has four wild card picks to go with his eight players who qualified through the points table – Phil Mickelson, Hunter Mahan, Bubba Watson, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Dustin Johnson, Jeff Overton & Matt Kuchar. Pavin will announce his wild card picks on September 7th.
