He’s now 11/4 with Bet 365 to win the Open.
Rory McIlroy took advantage of some gentle conditions to light up the first round of the British Open championship.
The youngster showed his liking for St.Andrews with a 63. It had 7 birdies and 1 eagle – he didn’t drop a single shot.
McIlroy loved the mild weather, saying it was a great time to go out: “The course was there to be taken apart. I had a lot of support out there today and it was fantastic. The support gets you going.”
So far no-one has come within three shots of McIlroy and with the conditions worsening, he has every chance of taking a commanding lead into Day 2.
McIlroy again emphasised how his confidence was boosted by Graeme McDowell’s US Open victory, saying: “Its given me a lot of belief a friend of mine can go out and win a major. I took a lot of Graeme’s win.”
