From a functional point of view, Manchester United need just a draw to qualify for the knock out stages, and they are content to rest the trio of Rio Ferdinand , Nemanja Vidic, and Darren Fletcher. Wayne Rooney, in whatever form, will get some much needed game time from his perspective. Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans will be the centre-backs, with it being one of the biggest nights of Smalling’s fledgling career so far. United have kept grinding out results, and the game will be different from the draw at Old Trafford, where Walter Smith’s side defended wth vigour and ambition was minimal.
Rangers are suffering with injuires of their own and resting people is not really an option. They have Madjid Bougherra and Andy Webster, plus midfielder Maurice Edu and strikers James Beattie and Nikica Jelavic, all ruled out, while its fitness test time for Sasa Papac. With Rangers two points behind Valencia in the group, they can’t be too defensive, and Smith believes they may be forced into a more attacking frame of mind because of the personnel available.
