Pakistan: 1/2
West Indies: 13/8
Pakistan showed what they can be in their last match, where they inflicted a deserved defeat on Australia. The quality of their bowling attack shone through, with Umar Gul in particular looking like one of the bowlers of the tournament. Pakistan seem to have added an extra batsman to their line up, and they feel comfortable with the balance of the side. They seem to have a full range of bowling options – they have opened with spin and the express pace of Shoaib Akhtar at different times in this World Cup. They have destructive batsmen and if it wasn’t for their ability to occasionally implode, you’d be hugely impressed. So far they have mostly worked as a unit though.
The West Indies have suffered two notable batting collapses in their final two group games, but they should have their best side ready and the possible return of Shivnarine Chanderpaul could add to their middle order. Chris Gayle is also recalled, and a big innings from him is surely needed if the West Indies are to cause an upset. The difference might be in the spin bowling the two sides have available to them – Pakistan’s advantage there seems obvious.
