9/2 Mon Parrain, 13/2 Wishful Thinking, 10/1 Daves Dream, 12/1 Great Endeavour, The Giant Bolster, 16/1 Loosen my Load, Araldur, Aerial, Tullamore Dew, Divers, 18/1 Bar
Mon Parrain has been backed consistently during the week, and was 6/1 in places back on Monday. Those odds have long since gone. He appears to have a lot in his favour. He’s trained by Paul Nicholls, and has a relatively light weight. He’s shown he’s a good jumper with his second in the Topham Trophy over the Grand National fences – which is a similar cavalry charge. Everything does seem set for him, with the only doubt that sometimes Paul Nicholls horses can need a run. The only question mark is whether he might just need the run.
Wishfull Thinking is second favourite, with trainer Phillip Hobbs talking him up and saying he’s improving. He is seen as short as 25/1 for the Gold Cup and has a fair chunk of weight to give away to some of his rivals. This might be what makes him hard to fancy, but he does look a progressive type and merits serious consideration.
Third favourite Dave’s Dream is lightly raced and with Poquelin squeezing the weights down, he has just 10st 3lb, but he was a long way behind Poquelin in his last outing.
The best each-way choice could be The Giant Bolster, who has shown some talent and might be a little ahead of the handicapper. He has won at Cheltenham, but you are takng a bit of a chance on his jumping in this competitive event.
