The Open Golf Odds naturally predict a second major of the year for Rory McIlroy, who is a very clear favourite.

A home grown winner looks likely too, with Luke Donald and Lee Westwood rated the two players most likely to challenge the Ulsterman’s current dominance.

OPEN GOLF PREVIEW

Rory McIlroy has been in the remarkable position of leading for 7 out of the 8 rounds of this year’s two majors so far, and after his Masters implosion his US Open victory was dominant and intimidating for his rivals. The one thing that may count against him is not having played a single tournament since then. While he might be fresh, it’s impossible to know exactly what effect the US Open victory will have had. It seemed as if Graeme McDowell found having the title almost a chore, but it seems the uncomplicated McIlroy doesn’t share the same burdens. The weather forecast appears to favour him too. Nice life.

Luke Donald managed to take the build up title to the event by winning the rain hit Scottish Open. A consistent high finisher, he seems to have finally shown that ability to win on a consistent basis. With his game honed on the US college circuit, Donald is like many players from the States when it comes to adapting to the curiosities of links golf.  However, that may not be such of a factor with the rough thought to be light and the punishment for missing the fairways less than usual. It might pay to look at people who are long hitters here.

Lee Westwood remains without a major title but plenty of placed finishes, while seeing relative unknowns grab majors in the shape of Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel. Sergio Garcia seems to be popular as a Ballesteros tribute, and the consistent Steve Stricker leads a questionable looking American contingent. Ben Curits won last time here when the course was criticised as a bit of a luckfest. So beware!

OPEN GOLF TIPS

Martin Kaymer is a long hitter and is worth backing at 25/1 with Stan James, who are paying out on the top six places. For a big outsider go for Alvaro Quios, a long hitting European tour winner at 100/1. Use our link and you can claim a free £25 bet too!
