While Newcastle are in 10th place in the Premier League, they are only six points off the relegation zone. However Alan Pardew believes one more win should be enough to retain their place in the top-flight for next season, which is really mission accomplished. Their main concern tonight will be going into the match without suspended midfielder Kevin Nolan, their biggest goal threat. Cheik Tiote does come back into midfield and James Perch is unbanned, but with Shola Ameobi also a doubt it’s difficult to see just where their goal threat can come from here.
Tim Krul may have to replace Steve Harper, but he’s not a concern. United are wobbling a bit at home and generally, with just two wins in their last 7 games at St.James’s Park.
Manchester United can welcome back Wayne Rooney and Jonny Evans after they both had to sit out that surpise FA Cup semi-final defeat by Manchester City, but Paul Scholes begins a three match ban. United’s main weakness this season has been their Premier League away form, where it’s five wins out of 16 on the road. However, they do seem to have stepped up a gear judging by their recent performances at West Ham and elsewhere. Tiredness may be an issue, but they can open up a nine point lead here and can freshen the squad up a bit.
