Visitors yesterday will have seen our preview of the first match, James Blake v Alexandr Dolgopolov. Blake has home town advantage but questionable form, while Dolgopolov is a player to watch for the future. He’s a game down but no matter. Anyone who watched Blake last week in Cincinnati must be concerned about his long term ability, and we’ll see if the big hitting Ukrainian can take this.
Marcos Baghdatis ought to be able to continue his good form against Juan Igancio Chela, who struggled past the modest Donald Young yesterday. Chela is more a creature of clay than hard courts, so Baghdatis – as long as he is not starting to feel fatigued – ought to score a comfortable win here.
The most interesting match is Victor Hanescu v Radek Stepanek. Having gone out qualifying, Stepanek has been re-incarnated as a Lucky Loser and beat Fernando Gonzalez to get here. However, Gonzalez is back from knee problems. Hanescu has been in poor form since Wimbledon, but showed a few signs of life in Toronto and his win over Daniel Brands. He is good for an upset here.
