While Manchester United will be without Wayne Rooney once more – and frankly is it doing them any harm – Spurs are in two minds about whether or not to play Gareth Bale.

Manchester United go into this game minus Rooney, Ryan Giggs and Michael Owen, but with Javier Hernandez enjoying increased responsibility, they do have an attacking threat. They laboured to a Carling Cup win over Wolves and a proud record against Spurs at Old Trafford – they last won their in 1989 – is looking like it could come under pressure. They showed good resilience in a win over Stoke though, but have become the league’s draw specialists.
It seems bizarre Spurs should talk of resting Gareth Bale for this match, ahead of the home tie with Inter Milan midweek. The mysterious supplication to Manchester United apparently continues from fellow managers – why should Spurs write this one off? They are missing Michael Dawson (knee & ankle), Jermaine Defoe, Tom Huddlestone (both ankle), Vedrun Corluka and Ledley King but the one thing that Spurs are meant to have this season is squad depth. They must surely head north with positive aspirations.
