Evens: Sebastian Vettel (1st on grid), 11/4 Lewis Hamilton (2nd), 5/1 Mark Webber (3rd), 13/2 Jenson Button (4th), 25/1 Fernando Alonso (5th)
This does look to be a race that will be fought out between Red Bull and McLaren judging by the qualifying pace they set and the gap to their nearest rival, Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso. Other than saying that, which is not a work of genius, things look less clear.
The Sepang circuit, unlike some others, does offer overtaking opportunities, and these can be enhanced by the new rules that allow wings to be flattened if you are close to the car in front for a period, plus the often mocked KERS system that can bring a power boost per lap, which again could be strategically deployed to enhance overtaking. It’s something Mark Webber believes could make a significant difference here.
Lewis Hamilton says he’s pleasantly surprised by McLaren’s pace, and if he can edge past Vettel at the start he has the competitive edge to make things close at least. Jenson Button is in 4th, but in theory his more gentle style ought to suit this era of enhanced tyre wear, so a case can be made for all four.
Throw in the possibility of thunderstorms, and a lively race is due – between the top four anyway.
With the possibility of rain and maybe a dynamic start, we like backing Lewis Hamilton at 11/4 with Betfred – they are also running a special offer where if your selection finishes second to Fernando Alonso your stake will be refunded as a free bet!
