Crawley spent some serious money to cruise to the Conference title and the only team they have lost to so far this year is Manchester United. They’ve made further additions this time round and looked an impressive side when beating AFC Wimbledon in the Carling Cup. Given Stevenage went up last year, its easy to see why they are favourite – but they are a short price.
To us, it’s a slight surprise to see Swindon as second favourites. They’ve had a massive turnaround in personnel since last season and an un-tried manager in Paolo Di Canio. He’s made the right noises, but they have to be a wait and see proposition. Bristol Rovers have taken Torquay’s Paul Buckle as manager, and re-shaped their squad too, with a whole host of experienced players, like Scott McGleish and Adam Virgo. They should certainly go close, while the arrivals of Andy Whing and Peter Leven look like good recruits from Oxford, who look likely play off contenders.
Shrewsbury look likely to be stable at best, while Rotherham have also revamped their squad with Andy Scott having a good knowledge of this division after taking Brentford to promotion. Accrington are not strongly fancied despite making the play-offs last season. As ever, some of their better players have moved on, but manager John Coleman appears to be a genius at digging out free transfers who can do a good job. They are a good bet on the handicap system.
Southend, in their second season under Paul Sturrock, might also punch above their perceived weight.
At the foot of the table, as always, Barnet, Macclesfield and Cheltenham are tipped to struggle.
Bristol Rovers have a decent fan base, experiened players and a manager with success at this level. We’ll back Bristol Rovers at 10/1 with Paddy Power – use the link and you can claim a free £20 bet!
