11/2 Huddersfield Town, Sheffield Wednesday, 13/2 Preston North End, 8/1 Charlton Athletic, 9/1 Sheffield United, 14/1 Brentford, MK Dons, 16/1 Bar
Huddersfield are worthy favourites at the head of the market after losing in the play-off final. You might question Lee Clark’s abilities after missing out in the last two years with a big budget, but the arrival of the exellent Danny Ward and a slightly weaker looking league ought really to help them over the line. Sheffield Wednesday being such a short price is perhaps more down to Gary Megson than their summer squad. He should put together a compact unit – but they are missing Neil Mellor, who is back at Preston.
Preston showed some signs of life at the tail end of their Championship season under Phil Brown, but they are vulnerable to player sales having little money to spend, while there also has to be a watching brief on Sheffield United, with a new manager in Danny Wilsonn and a youthful looking squad – who might have to gather one or two painful experiences before getting ready to go for promotion.
Charlton have gone on a big recruitment drive, but you would have to be worried by how they ended the season last year under Chris Powell – they really drifted away from play-off contention. Brentford have signed some decent looking players in Niall McGinn and Jonathan Douglas, but new boss Uwe Rosler hasn’t had much success in Norway as a manager.
MK Dons and Bournemouth will do well to match last season’s play-off runs, with the Bournemouth squad in particular much changed. Chesterfield have lost top scorer Craig Davies and to be frank, the two slots for promotion behind Huddersfield look wide open. It might be that Leyton Orient, who ended the season so well and who have added to the squad, can continue their upward momentum.
Huddersfield Town at 11/2 should take the title, while Leyton Orient at 22/1 with Paddy Power look a nice each-way investment. Back either using our link and you can claim a free £20 bet!
