IRISH DERBY PREVIEW

So after his gallant enough third at Epsom, Carlton House is, in theory, primed for glory in the Irish equivalent of the Derby and has been installed as a warm favourite to do. He’s up against 4 runners from the Aidan O’Brien stable, and his challenge comprises half the field. Pre-Epsom it didn’t look the strongest Derby and it still might not be the best, yet Carlton House, who was third at Epsom, is at a shorter price than second place Treasure Beach. Carlton House got no sot of run at all at Epsom, while Treasure Beach seemed to have everything hold his way.

Both of them finished ahead of Seville, yet he is seen as having a real chance of reversing the form as the ground turns soft. The going can’t afford to really hit soft for Carlton House, with Sir Michael Stoute concerned about his ability to handle the distance, while it should not have a huge impact on Treasure Beach. Native Khan will run despite ground concerns, while the rest of the field consists of O’Brien’s Roderic O’Connor, who won the Irish Guineas but failed to impress in his first run over the longer distance, and Memphis Tennessee. Dermot Weld runs Notable Graduate, beaten at odds on in his last outing. Dunbonye Express completes the line up.
