EVERTON v SUNDERLAND PREVIEW

This match is of real significance to Everton. They responded well from putting in a slothful effort at Bolton by knocking Chelsea out of the FA Cup. But their first priority is clearly Premiership points. They have injury worries over Jack Rodwell, Tim Cahill, Marouane Fellaini, Victor Anichebe and Louis Saha, which is clearly tearing a significant chunk out of their starting line up. Some of them should make it, along with the returning Phil Jagielka. Everton do have the “Indian sign” over Sunderland though, they have not lost to them in 12 Premier League games.

Sunderland’s problems haven’t stemmed immediately from the sale of Darren Bent, but more from starting to ship goals. They couldn’t handle Stoke’s physicality and shipped four at home to Chelsea. They continue to miss the uncomplicated defending of Michael Turner, while Lee Cattermole’s combative presence is not in midfield either. The Black Cats have also developed an ability to throw away leads. However, with neither side at full strength, who will show the quality necessary to win a potentially tight game?
