Someone, somewhere, should come up with a plausible argument that England can actually give the World Champions a decent game here. It’s at home, they are at Wembley, bulldog spirit…er…um…that’s it.
The absence of Wayne Rooney is clearly a further problem, while it’s a massive task for Phil Jones to plug the gaps in midfield and try and limit the space that the likes of Xavi, Andres Iniesta and David Silva have to weave passing patterns. If Darren Bent is the lone frontman, can he stretch Spain at the back, or keep possession long enough to get some of his colleagues up the pitch. Both of those are challenges enough, compared to dealing wth the pass and move and move that dominates possession. There are also concerns over the fitness of Phil Jagielka.
Spain are also in the luxurious position of having depth outside their starting eleven. Pepe Reina is a high quality back up keeper, David Silva hasn’t always been starting and there is Cesc Fabregas and Juan Mata also available. In short, Spain will win this. And we suspect they won’t have to work that hard, as England can’t keep the ball long enough to really attack for extended periods.
