As stated, neither of these two sides has had much of a World Cup campaign so far, despite the fact that one will be making the semi-finals in New Zealand. England were perilously close to elimination in their last pool match with Scotland and were behind almost throughout until Chris Ashton’s late try. Coach Martin Johnson has come under pressure through a sequence of sluggish performances and much off pitch embarrasment caused by his players “socialising” during their time in New Zealand. His interesting on pitch decision has been to pair Jonny Wilkinson at fly-half with Toby Flood at centre, when many expected them to be the other way round. It gives extra kicking options, with Wilkinson being poor with his penalty count. It might be another conseravtive game plan, relying on the pack to grind the French down.
France are playing up to their national stereotype with considerable flair, by displaying pretty savage internal divisions and a close on mutiny under the reign of coach Marc Lievremeont, who did refere to his players as cowards. Their loss to Tonga was thoroughly dismal, but they do have talented individuals who could beat England if they put their minds to it. All the evidence so far on their displays during this World Cup is that they won’t.
