FIFA has suddenly decided that they have to re-examine the use of technology in football after embarrassing errors in the England-Germany and Argentina-Mexico games at the World Cup.
Replays showed Frank Lampard had clearly scored for England when his chip bounced down off the cross-bar, but neither referee nor linesman gave the goal, while Argentina’s first goal against Mexico was clearly offside. World Cup organisers dropped a further clanger by showing the mistake on big screens when there was no way the on pitch officials could correct the mistake.
FIFA President Sepp Blatter said the issue of goal-line technology only would be considered, saying: “It is obvious that after the experiences so far at this World Cup it would be a nonsense not to re-open the file on goal-line technology.”
He refused to bow to any calls for other incidents to be checked, adding “Personally I deplore it when you see evident referee mistakes but it’s not the end of a competition or the end of football, this can happen.”
“The only thing I can do is yesterday I have spoken to the two federations directly concerned by referees mistakes. I have expressed to them apologies and I understand they are not happy and that people are criticising.”
FIFA had appeared to rule out any assistance from cameras earlier this year following a vote by one of its many sub committees.
The organisation is also planning to introduce new initiatives to improve refereeing at the highest level later this year.
The two referees involved in the matches, Jorge Larrionda (England-Germany) and Roberto Rosseti (Argentina-Germany) will not be in charge of any more matches in the tournmaent.
goa-line technology is the bare minimum that FIFA should implement for the next world cup.
offside rulings & red card send offs should also be look at by a so called video ref or panel. to make the game fairer for all teams / countries playing at the next world cup !!!!
