This game looks to have come at a nice time from a Chelsea perspective – as they face the group and Champions League weaklings off the back of a poor run of form in the Premier League. Wild rumours were circulating that Carlo Ancelotti had left the club yesterday – albeit not wild enough to reach our office – but the Italian said: “These rumours are totally untrue. I have my contract until 2012. I love this club and these players and I have a lot of confidence in the squad.”
There’s no Frank Lampard or John Terry, but Michael Essien can play, while youngster Jeffrey Bruma is expected to get a chance to feature. Chelsea did dominate against Birmingham, albeit without finding their scoring touch, but they should get plenty of chances here.
Zilina came through all the qualifying rounds to make it this far, but their frailties have been exposed and they were drubbed 7-0 by Marseille in their last match, having lost just 1-0 in France. Whether that game will see them go completely in their shells and shut up shop here, we can only speculate, but if Chelsea can’t win this, they do have problems.
