12/1 Rory McIlroy, 16/1 Lee Westwood, Tiger Woods, Steve Stricker, 18/1 Dustin Johnson, Luke Donald, 20/1 Phil Mickelson
Rory McIlroy’s position as favour is largely based on that crushing US Ope performance. Since then he’s played very little, with an adequate showing at the Open, though nothing earth shattering. McIlroy’s opinion on links golf is perhaps not too complimentary, as he appears to be keen to move back to the US Tour, and the kind of course that Firestone is. It would be a surprise if he could hit the ground running quite so quickly.
It’s a surprise to see Tiger Woods so short, given he is not fully fit and playing his first tournament in months. At 16/1 he can probably safely be dismissed from betting calculations, as he wasn’t winning even before his latest injuries. Lee Westwood remains in that close but no cigar category, and Steve Stricker again is consistent.
There has to be a case for Luke Donald, who was in fine form just before the Open championship, with a string of high finishes, allied to tournament wins. He showed signs of a return to form in the final round of the Canadian Open, with a low final round.
Dustin Johnson shouldn’t be fara way, while Rory Sabbatini is an outside bet who likes the course.
Luke Donald at 18/1 with Paddy Power looks a good bet to win, while Rory Sabbatini at 66/1 with Paddy Power should give each-way value. Use our links and you can claim a free £20 bet!
