This is a beautifully balanced tie, and frankly it’s nice to see some domestic two-legged games, though the squeeze on the calendar makes them increasingly unlikely. The question is whether or not Birmingham do have the fire power to win by a two goal margin. David Bentley can’t play in this one – he’s cup-tied, so the Blues may look to Cameron Jerome. They haven’t won since December and have just been drubbed 5-0 at Manchester United. The problem is they don’t look that threatening in front of goal – and that might apply even against the league’s bottom side.
The Hammers are missing two very useful players in Frederic Piquionne and Victor Obinna, but they did put in a decent performance at Everton and they do seem to show their best in cup competitions so far. Hopefully they will be positive here and not try and sit on their lead. They do have some good players in midfield, notably Scott Parker, who can help them keep possession.
