BASEL v MANCHESTER UNITED PREVIEW

The injuries are just mounting up at an awkward time for Manchester United as they prepare for this meeting with the Swiss side. Dimittar Berbatov has joined Javier Hernandez on the sidelines, and Danny Welbeck is only just coming back from injury to partner Wayne Rooney up front. Michael Owen is also missing, so there is very little back up. Add that to the way United have been grinding out results, rather than showing genuine flair, and you do appear to have a recipe for trouble. Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic are set to be the central defensive partnership, an indication that United don’t wish to take risks.

Basel were lively at Old Trafford and they know if they win here they go through. A pair of Frei’s, Fabien and Alexander, roasted the United defence on that occasion and it took a late Ashley Young goal for United to avoid defeat in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford. Their domestic form is also strong. Basel are 6 points clear at the top of the Swiss League, and they’ve also won 7 of their 9 home league matches. The signs for them are encouraging.
