Backstage is trained by Gordon Elliott, who trained Silver Birch (pictured) to win the National back in 2007, so he could win the race twice in four years.

BACKSTAGE GRAND NATIONAL PREVIEW

Silver Birch’s win announced Gordon Elliott as a trainer to follow. Four years on he’s now widely respected as a shrewd trainer and placer of a horse (i.e. he is good at finding races for his horses to win).

Backstage is a 9-year-old and has 10st 12lb to carry, so that definitely puts him in the range of age winners and carried weights in past Grand Nationals which is a big positive. The big question about him is just what he’s been up to in the past year or so. His last official racecourse outing was  almost a year ago, where he finished well down the field in the Galway Plate. Since then he has had just two public outings, and they were in Irish point-to-points, the amateur races organised by local hunts as a big day out, so what the form of those is, is anyone’s guess. He won comfortably both times.

He was going well in the race last year when brought down on the second circuit, so the fences should not hold too many fears.

Our own opinion is this preparation is left-field, even by recent standards, but his trainer has to be respected.
