AUSTRALIAN OPEN WOMENS FINAL PREVIEW

This is a really interesting match up, and a better one if you have backed the Chinese player at 33/1 as we suggested at the start of the event. Clijsters has done what she’s needed to do so far, raising her level as and when required to make it into the final. Chinese player Li has done well too, and her ferocious groundstrokes and baseline hitting have helped her come through some difficult times, most notably when she saved match points against Caroline Wozniacki in her semi-final.

The key to the match lies in how Clijsters deals with Li’s power game. If she can move her around the court, use her own athleticism to keep getting the ball back and drag the Chinese player around the baseline or into the net (though she can volley) then Clijsters should have done enough to disarm Li and grab another major title.

However, when they last met in Sydney, Clijsters sprinted out at the start, and then got battered by a barrage of Li winners as the Chinese player took that pre-Australian Open title. Clijsters, though, has the edge in experience of the big occasion.
