1/12 Andy Murray v Tim Smyczek 6/1
4/1 Andy Murray to win the US Open
Murray has spoken a little more about his split with coach Miles Maclagan, just saying they have gradually drifted apart – with the Scot saying he is still looking to improve after his Wimbledon exit to Rafael Nadal – and that his game had reached something of a plateau over the past few months.
However, Murray does believe he knows what it takes to make the next step – and he’ll have to implement it quickly. The US Open is one of his favourite of the Grand Slams. It’s where he reached his first major final.
Darren Cahill continues to be tipped as Maclagan’s successor once the US Open is done.
Having met coaching “consultant” Alex Corretja in Miami, Murray is thought to be without a coach this week, so the only way he’ll have found out anything about opponent Tim Smyczek, ranked 192 in the world, is through watching him in his first round win. The man from Milwaukee has come through qualifying and usually plays in Divison Two, the challenger tour.
It looks a nice gentle workout for Murray as he gets used to the American heat and hard court surface once more.
