Andy Murray is in US Open action at last on Day 3, after seeing big rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal start off with straight sets wins.

Murray takes on the Slovakian Lukas Lacko in his opening match. Lacko is a capable player with a decent serve who has had the odd day in the sun, but he is ranked 71 and if Murray plays with the positive intent he showed in Toronto, he should bag a comfortable win. It’s important to win quickly, playing in the heat of the day, to conserve precious energy. Mardy Fish and David Nalbandian suffered long five setters yesterday.
Other big names in action in the men’s draw are John Isner – a big man in every sense. Normally he would beat Portgual’s Federico Gil comfortably but hold fire on backing him as he has been struggling with a bad ankle injury. Tomas Berdych should also get a good workout – at least – against the Frenchman Michael Llodra. Also in the men;s event is a good econd round match, where Andy Roddick should be tested by the talented but streaky Serb, Janko Tipsarevic.
In the women’s singles, Kim Clijsters is in second round actiom, but the most intriguing match is Ana Ivanovic versus Chinese seed Jie Zheng. Ivanovic has a genuine chance here, if she can keep her mind working to its best and show her true ability.
Venus Williams takes on Rebecca Marino, who is ranked 181 and came through qualifying.

Yesterday saw some major surprises, notably Marcos Baghdatis losing to the apparently out of form Arnaud Clement, while David Nalbandian and Mardy Fish also struggled. These players have been in some of the best form of the summer on hardcourts – have they left their best behing on the courts of Washington, New Haven and Toronto?
why is andy murray playing on day three when federer plays on day one, if they meet in the final again federer willl be fresher,
