Can the Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders or Kansas City Chiefs upset the form book?
The San Diego Chargers went 13-3 last year but couldn’t find a way to the Superbowl. They have a hugely respected QB in Philip Rivers but worries over hold out pair, the Pro Bowl receiver Vincent Jackson and standout left tackle Marcus McNeill. They also have to gamble on rookie Ryan Mathews to get their running game going – one of their weak spots of last season. They are also missing stand out defensive lineman Jamal Williams, who is now a Bronco. He offered plenty when fit. The Chargers may struggle to hit 13 wins, but they can still win the AFC West. The Denver Broncos added college star QB Tim Tebow as one of their draft picks, but he’ll start behind Kyle Orton. The offensive line looks relatively young and could be exposed, while the Broncos are relying on Demaryius Thomas, at WR and LB Eric Decker to make a quick impact having been drafted. This is a season of evolution, and success of any kind is far from guaranteed.
The Oakland Raiders have a new QB in town after Jason Campbell joined them from Washington. This should help immediately, though he may be feelign some bruises standing behind a weak looking offensive line. There are also questions over the young receiving corps too, while the top two draft picks focused on closing holes in the defence. The Raiders should be a little more competitive, but don’t look near to being a threat to the best.
The Kansas City Chiefs might just be the team to snatch second. There are signs of life with a new offensive co-ordinator, Charlie Weis, and plans for a clock eating running game to grind out wins – which keeps a fragile looking defense off the field. Eric Berry, a safety who was a first round draft pick, does look an exciting addition but the front seven aren’t going to frighten the best.
